Is it ear wax?

Common signs of ear wax build-up

Ear wax (cerumen) protects your ears, but too much can block the canal. Cotton buds, hearing aids, earbuds and naturally heavy wax can all make it worse.

Muffled hearing

Sounds seem dull or quieter than usual, often in one ear.

Fullness or pressure

A blocked, “plugged” feeling that doesn’t clear.

Earache

Discomfort or a dull ache inside the ear.

Tinnitus

Ringing, buzzing or humming sounds.

Itchiness

Irritation or itching inside the ear canal.

Dizziness

Feeling off-balance or light-headed.

Odour or discharge

An unusual smell or fluid from the ear.

Hearing aid whistling

Feedback or poorer sound from your hearing aids.

Pain, discharge or sudden hearing loss? Call us and we’ll advise whether you should see your GP first.

What is microsuction?

The gentle, precise way to clear ear wax

Microsuction uses a fine, low-pressure suction tip, guided by magnification, to lift wax out of the ear canal. Because there’s no water involved, it avoids the mess and risks of old-style syringing and suits most people, including hearing aid wearers.

  • Gentle: no water or syringing, which reduces the risk of infection and discomfort.
  • Precise: a binocular optical system lets our audiologists see exactly what they’re removing.
  • Quick: often done within minutes, with immediate relief for most people.

FAQ

Ear wax removal questions

Does microsuction hurt?

Most people find it comfortable. You’ll hear a gentle suction noise and may feel a slight cool or tickling sensation. Your audiologist will check in with you throughout and can pause at any time.

Is ear wax removal covered by Medicare?

Wax removal by audiologists isn’t covered by Medicare. Our price is $99 per visit for both ears.

How long does it take?

It’s usually done within minutes, but it depends on the type of ear wax and how blocked your ears are. Sometimes it can take longer, and in certain difficult cases it may need to be done over more than one visit.

Who performs the procedure?

Wax removal at Fidelity Hearing Centre is performed by trained audiologists who are experienced in microsuction and ear care. If we notice anything that needs medical attention, we’ll let you know. In addition to referring you to your GP, we can also refer you to our close network of ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists.
