Subsidies & rebates
Hearing care may cost less than you think. Choose a tab to see what government programs, your private health extras and Medicare could put towards your hearing tests and hearing aids.
Government subsidies
The Australian Government Hearing Services Program can cover your hearing assessment and provide free or subsidised hearing aids, with ongoing support.
Who is eligible?
Australian citizens or permanent residents aged 21 or over who:
- hold a Pensioner Concession Card
- hold a DVA Gold Card, or a DVA White Card for hearing
- are the spouse of one of the card holders above
- are a member of the Australian Defence Force
- are referred by an Inclusive Employment Australia provider
A Commonwealth Seniors Health Card doesn’t qualify. If you’re under 26, Hearing Australia provides services under the program’s Community Service Obligations.

Veterans
Eligible veterans can also get extra hearing support through DVA, such as assistive listening devices and tinnitus treatment. We’ll seek DVA approval for you.
NDIS participants
If you’re eligible for the Hearing Services Program, your hearing support comes through the program. The NDIS may fund extra supports it doesn’t cover.

Getting a Medicare rebate
Ask your GP for a referral before your hearing test, then bring it to your appointment. Without a referral, the full fee applies. Medicare doesn’t pay for hearing aids. For those, see the Government and Private health tabs.
