Getting a Medicare rebate for your hearing test

Ask your GP for a referral before your hearing test, then bring it to your appointment. Without a referral, the full fee applies. Medicare doesn’t pay for hearing aids. For those, see government hearing subsidies and private health rebates.

Who is eligible? Find out more

The Australian Government Hearing Services Program (HSP) subsidises hearing assessments and hearing aids for eligible adults. You may qualify if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, aged 21 or over, and hold one of these:

  • Pensioner Concession Card (or you are the spouse / partner of a holder)
  • DVA Gold Card (or spouse / partner)
  • DVA White Card for a hearing-related condition (or spouse / partner)
  • Current member of the Australian Defence Force (including reserves on continuous full-time service)

A Commonwealth Seniors Health Card on its own does not make you eligible for HSP.
